Far beyond the reach of land — five miles off the coast of Sri Lanka — a group of sailors stared into the impossible.

Through the rolling blue waves, they saw something that shouldn’t have been there. At first, it looked like debris bobbing in the distance, but then it moved — steady, rhythmic, desperate. A trunk. Rising and falling through the water.
It wasn’t driftwood.

It was an elephant.
